More and more people are realizing that the standard deodorant/antiperspirant is not good for you. Chemicals found in them such as parabens, aluminum, and fragrance, to name a few, have been linked to breast cancer. The chemicals, that prevent you from sweating and smelling, absorb into your skin, lymph nodes and breast tissue and reek havoc. But the problem is that it’s hard to find something to replace it that actually works.
I have tried countless natural deodorants only to realize I stink half way through the day. Even expensive products from health food stores didn’t do the trick. I finally stumbled onto a recipe and haven’t looked back since. It’s easy. It’s cheap. And it’s so effective! So here it is:
That’s it!!!!!! It’s preferable if you use unrefined coconut oil as it has more nutrients for your skin and you can mix up as small or large amount as you want (coconut oil has a shelf life of 3 years). I usually do around 1/4 cup of each at a time. It mixes best if your coconut oil is in a liquid state, so you may need to warm it a little first. Then add your baking soda. You can also add a scent to it at this time. Young Living’s Purification blend is exceptional for this since it neutralizes odors also. Frankincense is another great option since it has been shown to kill breast cancer cells. I also love geranium for a yummy floral scent. This part has almost endless possibilities. There are more manly smelling essential oils if you are making up a batch for the man/men in your life, such as sandalwood and vetiver. You could even add lemongrass to help repel bugs in the summer.
I store it in a glass container in my bathroom and scoop about a pea size amount for each arm pit. If you find it too gritty you can add more coconut oil. And if you if you find it too oily add more baking soda. Some people also like to add half arrowroot power (think natural cornstarch) and half baking soda to make it a smoother mixture. (So that would make it: 1/4 cup coconut oil, 1/8 cup arrowroot powder, 1/8 cup baking soda).
If for some reason you develop a rash you can try cutting the baking soda amount in half. You may also be sensitive to the essential oils (make sure you are using pure ones) and want to switch or eliminate them. Another reason a rash can occur is the coconut oil may be pulling out toxins that built up from the other deodorants. This simple armpit detox can help.
If you are not a fan of making your own concoctions or don’t care to spend the extra money I have recently heard great things about Primal Pit Paste. I’ve never tried it myself since the recipe above works so great and is so affordable but I know a lot people have found it effective.
I hope enjoy the recipe and it helps you as much as it did me!
